the tradition, culture and history of quilting, to promote knowledge and understanding of
all aspects of quilting, and to promote good fellowship among all persons interested in the
art of quilting. The Guild was organized by Sherry Burke, Betsy Henebry, Lucille Ladden,
Elaine Nichols, Elaine O’ Leary and Carol Sherrill. Elaine O’ Leary served as the Guild’s
first President. The first meeting of the Farmington Valley Quilters was held on January
16, 1991, the night the war began in the Persian Gulf. The group has continued to grow
through the years to its current 100+ members.
The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month, from September through
June at Eno Memorial Hall, 754 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury, CT 06070. Social time begins
at 7:00 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. The annual membership fee of $25
entitles members to monthly meetings, access to a monthly newsletter, and the
opportunity to participate in Guild sponsored workshops. The membership year runs from
July 1 to June 30. Guests are always welcome to attend meetings. A guest fee of $5 is
requested. Most meetings include a Show & Tell by members and either a lecture,
demonstration, or hands-on workshop. Members or nationally known quilters offer
workshops throughout the year. Members of the Guild may participate in several ongoing
activities such as Friendship Blocks and an annual Quilt Challenge. Members may also
participate in the Mystery Quilt, bus trips, the fabric swap program and the creation of
quilts for charitable organizations. The Guild held public quilt shows in October, 1995,
1998, 2002, 2004 and 2006. Planning is currently underway for Quilter’s Showcase VI in
the fall of 2008.
The Farmington Valley Quilters offers members and guests many opportunities for
inspiration, encouragement, knowledge and friendship. Membership is open to anyone
who is interested in quilting!
